Subject/Class Tutoring

Many of our students and families are looking for help with one or several subjects/classes. This is where most of the process work gets done. We help students build good study habits, methods to attack their school work efficiently, and the tools to self-assess and make sure they’ll get a solid grade.

For essays, we teach them how to approach their material, research, outline, write a good thesis, and break down their argument into topic paragraphs that add up to a complete and compelling whole. For math/science courses we show them how to track and consistently use the techniques that every class builds. We can help with any element of academic work that comes up in high school.

Middle School & High School

We often have students who are entering or preparing for a new level of school. For our students entering middle school we emphasize basic organizational skills and getting used to the expectations of their teachers— how to establish what success in school means, and how to make both their parental/academic obligations and their personal goals achievable.

In High School the level and quantity of school work can require an adjustment for many students, sometimes especially for those that are more accustomed to doing well without much effort. We help all high school students make the best use of their often busy schedules to excel in school and at their own goals without undue stress or anxiety. This can mean finding strategies that work best for each student, whether it’s rigorous note-taking, learning to prioritize their time and mental space, or practicing effective study tactics.

College/University Level

Several of our tutors have advanced degrees and we all love the more varied and in-depth nature of college and university work. We help students with challenging math and science classes, as well as adapting to the college essay-writing process, from the planning and research phase all the way to final drafts, revisions, and presentations. Extending on our approach to high school writing, we help students structure their papers in ways that make sense to them, following forms appropriate for their argument that will accomplish the assignment’s goals.

TEST PREP

Several of our tutors are experienced test-prep experts, and have helped many students raise their scores on the SAT/ACT, as well as subject tests. Let us know if SAT/ACT test prep is a focus for your family! All of our tutors are comfortable with AP test prep in their areas of specialty and can give students the tools to excel on their AP tests and in their AP classes without feeling like they’re struggling to keep up.

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS

We help students write authentic, compelling personal essays that demonstrate good communication skills, critical thinking, curiosity, and a positive outlook to college admissions. We can also help with other elements of college applications, such as setting timelines and completing the short answers and forms.

educational consulting

Sometimes families need help with their children’s education from a broader perspective combined with a closer examination of how to structure the academic experience. We want school and academics to be positive parts of every family’s life, and can help your family create that environment. INDEPENDENT STUDIES

Our tutors can guide students through independent projects and study units, usually during the summers, or with those who need an extra challenge, or occasionally for students with learning difficulties who thrive on academic successes outside of school. With various students of all ages, we’ve designed study units and sub-units on mythology, satire, creative writing, elementary math, the Cold War, science fiction, poetry writing and analysis, basic philosophy, electoral politics, personal narratives, history of architecture, basic programming, post-colonial Africa, and more.

Pricing

Our rates can vary between tutors and services, but range from $130-$160 per hour.

Session Policies

Our sessions are calm and practical.  We want to help our students work efficiently and build good organizational skills while striving toward greater depth and clarity in their schoolwork.

For in-person sessions, we implement an ‘open-door’ policy when our tutors are working with students.  In both in-person and online sessions, we ask that students work in an environment conducive to focus.

Feedback

Your tutor is available for a brief check-in at the end of each session, though we ask you to be considerate of their time, as they often have to drive to their next student’s house or set up their next meeting.  We can provide a written assessment of a student’s progress upon request. We’re also happy to communicate with teachers or follow up on any additional requests for feedback.

Cancellations

We do our best to reliably accommodate your scheduling needs.  Please cancel at least 24 hours in advance, and if your tutor has to cancel, we will do our best to provide the option of an appropriate substitute.

Sessions cancelled within 24 hours of their scheduled time are subject to the full session rate.
